The launch event for Hot Burrito the Alt.Country night curated by the guys at Diverse Records in Newport was a well attended affair for a bleak Wednesday night in the city once famed as the “new Seattle”.
First up was Gethin Pearson ably backed tonight by The Scenery made up of Steve on Lap-Steel and Guitar and Jo on violin. Gethin may wear a Shins T-Shirt but his vocal delivery is very Conor Oberst of Bright Eyes. The violin and pedal steel add a nice touch to his well structured songs. His EP, Hang On...Hang On due out later this month should be good if tonight is to go by. Preview it at www.myspace.com/gethinpearsonandthescenery
Headlining were Cardiff’s Silver Spurs who supported Redlands last month at the same venue. This time they were complemented by their pedal steel player Rhodri (who also plays for Secret Show) and is a master at his craft. Top banjo again from Gareth Bonello. Their short set contained the Handsome Family’s Weightless Again and a Gillian Welsh cover in among some originals. A bit ploddy in places, but pleasant all the same. Well done to Paul at Diverse for setting up the night. Were all looking forwards to many more first Wednesdays in the month. The MySpace page for Hot Burrito is: www.myspace.com/hot_burrito
