Ok, the hype is a bit hard to swallow, but this a corker of a single by anyone’s standards. They remind me of early Buzzcocks but from Sheffield rather than Manchester. If they knock a few more records out like this, it could turn kids away from the usual disco chart nonsense to guitar bands once more. Maybe the North will rise again...

Kate Bush - King of the Mountain (EMI)
Being heralded as something of a second coming since her return was confirmed a few months back, this single sounds alarm bells rather than peels of joy. She may not have released any records for 12 years, but no one expected her to release a record which sounds like it was recorded in the first days of her hiatus! Dated and cumbersome, just hope the rest of her material is a bit more relevant to this millennium or she could be scuttling back to her hiding place with Syd Barrett and Elvis before we know it!

Only available on their UK tour, this is a slice of sublime of screeching teenage punk-pop is worthy of anyone’s collection in luminous yellow one-sided 7” vinyl. Go on, admit you’re jealous!
