SINGLES OF THE MONTH

The Feeling - Sewn (Island)
This is pure pop indulgence. A slow 70s influenced anthem that is so radio friendly it may as well have its own channel and is sure to be played for years to come. They were brilliant live in Cardiff last month and are destined for big things on the strength of this. It may be safe and Beatlesque (especially the na-na na na na bit), but its very clever and before you know it you will be humming along...you’ve got me sewn...

Neal Casal - You Don’t See Me Cry (Fargo)
Neal was so good live in Cardiff recently but this is a really rather dreary and uninspired choice for a single. Considering the talent he obviously possesses he is capable of much better than repeating the song title ad nausium.. must do better.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - Is This Home On Ice (Wichita)
Second single from the quirky Americans sees them stake their claim as the new Talking Heads by mixing mid-80s indie guitar riffs with off-tune David Byrne vocals. Some may find it irritating but if the Kaiser Chiefs can sell shed-loads with that annoying “woaaaah” anything is possible!

Young Knives - Here Comes The Rumour Mill (Transgressive)
This trio of mock country folk seem to be breaking through on the rather wonderful Transgressive label. Their “mockney” accents and choppy guitar come across like a young spikey Supergrass or less annoying Blur. Good fun, but their previous single The Decision was better..

Howling Bells - Wishing Stones (Bella Union)
The female fronted Howling Bells single has enough nice reverb soaked lead guitar  driving it to make up for the lack of any real song, but nice enough all the same...
