SINGLE OF THE MONTH

The Grief Brothers - Silo/Broken Bottle Lament (Country Mile)
Local alt.country boys in limited vinyl single shock. The A side sees the Scud Mountain Boys lo-fi classic Silo nicely skiffled and twanged up to the nines. The B side sounds like Tom Waits mourning the loss of his beloved while backed by the Trumpton Town band. Available at Diverse Records in Newport or online at:

Be Your own Pet - Fire Station (Rough Trade)
Absolutely loved their first single Damn Damn Leash but this is a note by note rip off of the Buzzcock’s Boredom as sung by Karen from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Due to their young age, there is a small chance that it is pure coincidence, but I doubt it! ....

We Are Scientists - Nobody Move, Nobody Get Hurt (Virgin)
Told you so! We told you months ago they would be massive after we saw them support The Editors and said every track was a possible single on the Wolfs Hour mini-album from which this is re-recorded for Virgin Records. Released on blood red vinyl, this can only be the first step in their bid for world domination. A great piece of guitar pop.

Stuart Staples - Say Something Now (Lucky Dog)
Tindersticks frontman’s first solo single is a limited 7” affair on his own label. Reminiscent of his earlier work, the song slowly builds from a simple plink-plink drum machine to include keyboards, guitars and an array of brass instruments courtesy of the talented Terry Edwards. “Say something now, say something that moves me, something that I can keep” Fans of the band will not be disappointed.
